It is almost impossible to shy away from some crispy fried food. It is even much more difficult because its aroma doesn’t make it any easier to shy away from. We all of us know the dangers of fried food. However, with advancement in technology, air fryer seems to be a solution to this unhealthy ways by use of little or no oil. However, there is that inner voice that always shouts ‘What if air fryer causes cancer?’.

Without oil, how does the air fryer “fry” food?

When we cook food, we normally use heating methods, including direct heating and indirect heating. The commonly used method in life is indirect heating.

Typically, indirect heating transfers heat through a heat transfer medium to heat and cook the food. What about air fryer. How does that work? Usually, there is a stainless steel heating element and a turbo wind on the top.

When switched on, the heating element creates hot air and then the turbo wind makes the air flow in 360 degree and generate heat that allows food to be heated in a very fast way. The food surface will quickly get heated thereby developing a crispy surface.That’s why the food eventually becomes crispy on surface but still juicy inside.

Can food made in an air fryer cause cancer?

The answer is No!

Air fryers use high temperatures to heat food. Therefore, some chemical and physical changes occur during the cooking process. such as texture improvement, special flavor, etc., and some chemical components that are harmful to the human body may also be produced, such as acrylamide.

Acrylamide is a carcinogen, which has been listed as a 2A carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of  the  World  Health Organization. This kind of carcinogen is mainly based on the carcinogenicity data of experimental animals, but it is also likely to be carcinogenic to humans.

There is still insufficient evidence that acrylamide causes cancer. Taking a step back, even if there are real risks, air fryers are easier to control the cooking temperature and safer than other kitchen utensils.

Therefore, there is no need to worry too much about the claim that food made in an air fryer can cause cancer.
